Projects and actions

Many projects have been developed over 18 years of action. We will thus highlight those with the greatest impact and results for the people they benefitted:

1990 | Founding and Organizing Mirim-Brasil Project – Articulated the formation of Mirim-Brasil in diverse states of Brazil, including Amazônia, Pará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Alagoas, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, and Paraná.

1991 | Denouncements – Mirim-Brasil created various documents and gave both local and international interviews on the situation of children in Pernambuco, Brazil.

1991 | 1st International Action – IFM-SEI (International Falcon Movement – Socialist Education International) international camp in Norköping, Sweden with 7,300 people (children, youth, and adults) from 53 countries.

1991 | Mirim-Brasil became a member of the IFM-SEI, during the XIX Congress of the IFM-SEI in Borzée, Belgium.

1992 – 1996 | Mirim-Brasil held annual camps for children and adolescents with participation of representatives from partner institutions in Itamaracá, Pernambuco, Brazil.

1992 – 1996 | Child Mother Project – The first initiative of Mirim-Brasil to gain public notoriety after the entity’s founding. The entity worked with adolescent girls between the ages of 12 and 17 who were pregnant or already mothers, offering them guidance on maternity and paternal obligations.

1995 – 2003 | Adolescent Apprentice Project – A partnership between Mirim-Brasil and the Brazilian Postal and Telegraph Company which gave 500 students aged 16 to 18 their first professional experience.

1995 | Mirim Brasil is elected Vice President of the IFM-SEI during the XX Congress, in Oslo, Norway.

1995 | Freedom of Expression Project – A partnership between Mirim-Brasil and the Foundation of the Child and Adolescent, in Pernambuco, Brazil, working with imprisoned adolescents in recreational and educational activities, with participation of the Mirim-Brasil Theater.

1996 – 1999 | Computerize Yourself Project – Launched after one year of Mirim-Brasil’s team training. The objective was to capacitate adolescent youth in computers and citizenship, as well as to give reinforcement in Portuguese and Mathematics. This was a pioneering initiative among nongovernmental organizations in the field of information technology in the City of Recife, Brazil.

1996 – 2004 | Liberating Yourself Project – Through this project, Mirim-Brasil oversaw more than 70 adolescents who had been enrolled in the juvenile court’s Assisted Liberty Program in the completion of their service activities as an alternative to imprisonment.

1996 | The construction of the Geraldo Rolim School in the indigenous village of Xucuru, in the Pesqueira municipality, Pernambuco, Brazil, was an important project for Mirim-Brasil, in a partnership with the NGO Unga Örnar (Sweden). The school was the first educational institution in the area, and has the capacity to attend to 100 children.

1997 | Sanitation Brigade – Project which educated about 30 adolescents and youth on sanitary health, enabling them to act as “multiplying agents,” educating and disseminating information in respective communities.

1998 – 1999 | Mirim-Brasil’s Temporary Shelter House – A partnership between Mirim-Brasil and the government of Pernambuco’s Project Friendly Hand. In one year of operation the house served 165 children that lived in the streets and/or had no family ties.

1998 | Lekotek – Project which trained aids to attend to children with physical and mental disabilities.

2001 | Third election of Mirim Brasil as Vice President of the IFM-SEI.

2002 | Solidarity Project – A partnership between Mirim-Brasil, Unga Örnar (Sweden), and the Worker House of Ceagepe, in Recife, Brazil, to raise awareness about the rights of the child among the families that work at the General Supply Center of Pernambuco. Between 2004 and 2007 this action came to be developed at the Mirim-Brasil Little Schoolhouse, in partnership with the Community Meeting Center in the neighborhood of Altos dos Milagres, Recife.

2002 – 2006 | Formation of Youth Leadership in Angola, Africa – A Project realized in partnership with organizations in Sweden and Angola to capacitate young people in youth leadership, social participation, and administration of nongovernmental organizations.

2003 | Kids’ Ciranda Project – Offered soccer and capoeira classes as well as recreational and educational activities on the Statute of the Child and Adolescent to 63 children in the communities of Chie and Santo Amaro, Recife, Brazil.

2003 – 2005 | Youth Leadership Course – The participation of youth in the democratic decision-making process and the construction of a youth network in Latin America. This programmatic line came about in 2002 and continues to grow and strengthen together with organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia.

2003 | 30 adolescents from Mirim-Brasil’s Project Computerized Youth presented what they had learned during the project in displays at the 1st International Technology and Education Exposition and at the Products and Social Services Fair in Olinda, Pernambuco, Brazil.

2005 | Organized the 1st International Workshop on the Understanding and Dissemination of Information about the Convention on the Rights of the Child in Havana, Cuba.

2005 | Conducted the course “Reproductive Health: HIV-AIDS, a question of democracy” in Recife, Brazil. This initiative was a partnership between Mirim-Brasil and organizations from Angola and Sweden.

2006 | Millennium Youth – Raising awareness on the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) among adolescents and youth from Greater Recife, Pernambuco. This project also prepared Mirim-Brasil’s delegation, primarily adolescents and youth, to participate in Global Village 2006, in England.

2007 | Dialogue Circles – This project took the topic of a reduction in the age may be legally tried to schools and neighborhood entities, with the participation of 250 people, adolescents and youth from high-risk communities in Greater Recife, Pernambuco. The idea to promote these Dialogue Circles arose from a need to increase the debate that is waging in Brazil on a reduction from 18 to 16 years in Brazil.

2007 | Fifth election of Mirim-Brasil as Vice President of the IFM-SEI.

2008 – 2009 | ECA: Absolute Priority! Project – Initiative which plans to evaluate the levels of effectiveness of the Statute of the Child and Adolescent, and to promote the personal and political development of rights defenders. This initiative is a partnership between Mirim-Brasil, the Catholic University of Pernambuco, and the Institute for Specialized Technical Support to Citizenship (IATEC, in Portuguese)

2008 – 2010 | Network of African Organizations against HIV/AIDS, for Democracy Project - Strengthen organizations in 15 African countries through the development of local youth groups for greater political influence on the issue of HIV/AIDS.
